Thanks I just had a quick look and up popped a picture of Brian Phelps (the Tom Daley of his day) at my old school-couldn't see myself in the crowd but I remember the event he was just back from the Rome Olympics with a bronze medal,

Incidentally my Uncle Charlie worked with his dad and taught him to swim as a nipper. Not to dive although as my Uncle Charlie worked for the LEB ducking and diving was his speciality.

I'll have a scan through tomorrow too late now.

Don't know if you're on it but theres a facebook page called 'Memories of East Ham' that you might like. I saw what may be the only pic of my uncle joey on there, working on the white horse just before he was killed when it was hit the second time in days by a doodlebug.

I asked about Cookes and Mudies (or Moodys) earlier in the thread. I guess they disappeared some while ago?

For a while I attended Day Release at East Ham Tech and both were regular lunchtime venues. Never had the same experience since.

Arments in Walworth is my preference. don't rate cooks in the bush at all.

Re: Robins Pie & Mash in East Ham
Unfortunately I am old enough to remember when East Ham had two proper Pie and Mash shops. Against which Nathans is but a poor imitation, Cooke's was situated on High Street North and Moodie's in the Barking Road near the Town Hall. Cooke's featured a large butler sink at the front which housed live eels. When stewed the resultant juices provided the main ingredient in the liquor, ( Forget creamy liquor - the real stuff is eel juice cornflour and parsely)

Match days as a kid consisted of Pie and Mash for 1s 3d (pie 9d mash 6d) and entry to either the North or South Bank for 9d ( half the adult rate of 1s/6d) Two shillings was never better spent (10p to you youngsters).

This week I had Pie Mash and Eels at Lakeside Shopping it cost £7 and the Eels where cooked in a microwave!
It lacked flavour although the pies had less grissle. You all know how much a cheap match day ticket costs - slightly more than 1s/6d even for us OAPSs,

Such is progress

The one in exmouth mkt was undoubtedly the best, and yes I think it may be some kind of meat and beard place now.

Re: Robins Pie & Mash in East Ham
Duncan's was the best by far, never rated Nathan's, they served mash from an ice cream scoop!!! Mash should always be smeared across one side of the plate

i know 20 of my direct male ancestors in an unbroken line going back to 1535, and i can guess pretty well after that back to 1335.

Why are Americans so obsessed with their ancestors. I couldn't give a shite about whatever bum hole my ancestors came from and neither could anyone I know

She also let me see my first live game on that trip, so she is a pretty decent wife overall.

I used to like the one at ex mouth market, probably a pulled pork place now. Because we don't have enough of those.

It was England in general.

We took one day to look at where some of my family/ancestors' lived before they emigrated.

I am grateful to my wife for doing that for me.

Shadwell on your honeymoon?

Fuck me, living the dream

Re: Robins Pie & Mash in East Ham
Went to a place near Shadwell station years ago on my honeymoon.

If anyone remember the name of it, I would be grateful.

A few weeks ago, went by there for old time's sake when I had some time to kill waiting for some friends and a ride back to Oxford.

It is now a Halal chicken place called Fried and Grilled. Good times.

Pretty sure at least.

Britannia

It was called Leddiards and it was the best around by far, I was absolutely gutted when it closed down
